Baltic Sea~Bathing

Baltic Sea ~ Bathing - Relaxation while bathing and sunbathing on the Baltic beach!

Enjoy relaxing moments while taking a refreshing dip in the Baltic Sea and unwind on the beautiful German Baltic Sea beach.

The clear water and gentle waves provide the perfect backdrop to revitalize body and mind.

Leave everyday life behind and immerse yourself in the calming atmosphere of the slightly salty Baltic Sea water.

The Baltic Sea is characterized by weaker tides compared to the North Sea, meaning that water is always available for swimming and the currents are not as strong. This makes the Baltic Sea ideal for beachgoers who want to spend relaxing days on the sand. An unforgettable experience for all your senses awaits you on a Baltic Sea beach holiday along the diverse Mecklenburg coast! Along the Baltic coast, there's an ideal stretch of beach for every taste.

Whether you prefer a nudist beach, a traditional textile beach, or a sports beach, here you will find the perfect setting for relaxing days by the sea. Enjoy the variety and the opportunity to relax and be active in good company.

The best time of year for a refreshing dip in the Baltic Sea is undoubtedly the summer months, especially from June to August, when water temperatures range between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius. However, increased algae growth and the presence of some jellyfish are to be expected during this period. Alternatively, May and September also offer pleasant water temperatures, and the beaches are less crowded. For those eager to swim, the first dip of the season begins as early as January 1st, followed by invigorating ice-bathing sessions combined with exercise on the Baltic Sea beach, which are excellent for cardiovascular training.

Experience the Baltic coast in October too, when there are still plenty of hours of sunshine and the beaches are less crowded.

Enjoy sporting activities on the Baltic coast, such as beach walks, aqua walking, or social games like frisbee and volleyball on the sports beach. Whether diving, snorkeling, surfing, sailing, or fishing – the diverse beach activities offer you the perfect opportunity to relax in nature and leave the stress of everyday life behind. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Baltic Sea and enjoy unforgettable moments on the beach. Discover the idyllic coastal landscape of the Baltic Sea, where summer, sun, and the gentle sound of the waves come together harmoniously. The characteristic beach chairs invite you to relax and offer a perfect retreat. Lifeguard towers, staffed on the main beaches during the summer, ensure safety while bathing and swimming in the Baltic Sea. Trained personnel are ready to act quickly and effectively in case of emergency. Please observe the safety instructions and stay near the lifeguard towers to enjoy a carefree time at the beach. Your safety is our top priority. Enjoy the refreshing sea breeze and the numerous hours of sunshine, which support your vitamin D production. Furthermore, you can expect impressive cliffs, picturesque coastal forests, and protected nature reserves that invite you to unforgettable explorations.

~ Historic Baltic Sea bathing tradition in the oldest Baltic Sea resort, Heiligendamm ~

Heiligendamm, the first German seaside resort, was founded on July 22, 1793, on the Baltic Sea near Bad Doberan in Mecklenburg.

At the initiative of his personal physician, Professor Samuel Gottlieb Vogel, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg took the first step into the sea, an event considered the town's founding. Every year in June, the historic opening swim is celebrated to mark the start of the bathing season, a tradition that commemorates this significant period. The Grand Duke and Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, along with their entourage, resided in Bad Doberan during the summer months. Their ancestral seat is otherwise Schwerin Castle.

Every day, the aristocratic guests set off by carriage, and later by the Molli steam train, along the historic linden avenue (today's Dammchaussee) to the Baltic Sea beach at Heiligendamm, where they chose a suitable spot for bathing and pitched their tents. Later, the beach villas and cottages in Heiligendamm were built directly on the Baltic Sea beach as permanent summer accommodations.

Celebrate this tradition with musical entertainment at the historic opening swim and travel with Grand Duke Friedrich Franz, his charming wife Her Highness Alexandrine and the entire rest of the bathing party from Bad Doberan to Heiligendamm.

All bathing enthusiasts and interested parties are invited to participate in historical bathing attire or at least to enjoy the spectacle as spectators from the pier and the Baltic Sea beach!

Heiligendamm boasts a variety of diverse beach sections. The area easily accessible by car, from the historic old villas (the "string of pearls") and the pier to Börgerende, is predominantly flat. There you'll find ice cream parlors, snack bars with kiosks, and beach chair rentals. These beach chairs offer welcome protection from strong Baltic breezes if you haven't brought your own windbreak. Towards Kühlungsborn, near the children's beach, the beach is less stony and features a cliff coast; the same is true in the Baltic Sea resort of Nienhagen. Above both coastlines, you can admire the impressive little green "Ghost Forest" (Heiligendamm) and the larger "Ghost Forest" (a nature reserve in Nienhagen). The Baltic Sea Cycle Route also winds through these stunning coastal beech forests, offering beautiful views.

In Kühlungsborn West (formerly Brunshaupten), in the area of Riedensee and further towards Meschendorf, you can relax on the beautiful natural beach. An equally less crowded stretch of beach lies between Börgerende and the Baltic Sea resort of Nienhagen.
