~ Culture & Art in Bad Doberan - Heiligendamm ~
In Bad Doberan - Heiligendamm there are of course a number of cultural and historical sights to be discovered. Above all, of course, the monastery area of the Cistercian monks with the magnificent cathedral from 1186 in the center of an English park. The masterpiece of high Gothic brick Gothic is of course a must. What makes it special is its rich medieval decor, which is unique in Europe. Among other things, it includes the high altar, the oldest winged altar in art history from around 1300. There is also, for example, a 15 meter high double-sided cross altar with a monumental triumphal cross, a Marian chandelier with significant carvings, a chalice cabinet, wonderfully plastically carved choir stalls, an old one astronomical clock and of course chapels with unique tombs of dukes, bishops and Queen Margaret of Denmark. All of this can be viewed and explored in detail on a tour or one of the themed tours. Of course there are also guided tours to Bad Doberan - Heiligendamm with its Gothic and Classicist architecture. In addition to regular concerts, guided tours and church services, a biker church service takes place in the Münster at the beginning of May every year with thousands of bikers taking part in a rally. B. the historic monastery market in mid-June. With historical jugglers, dealers and craftsmen who practice their art on site, this allows an insight into the time of the Middle Ages. The town and spa museum with changing exhibitions is also located in the Möckelhaus of the monastery area. In the town center of Bad Doberan there are galleries, e.g. You can admire interesting art objects in the red pavilion and the Kunsthof Bad Doberan, for example. Even larger exhibition areas are located in the art gallery in Rostock and in Kühlungsborn. In addition to horse racing, various cultural events take place at the racecourse, which is only 1 km away from the Baltic Hotel. The multi-day Zappanale, scheduled for mid-July since 1990 in honor of Frank Zappa, deserves special mention. Another cultural monument is of course the historic steam train Molli, which connects Bad Doberan with its district of Heiligendamm and then continues to Kuehlungsborn.
The Mollitrain offers various themed rides, e.g. B. the Easter trips, St. Nicholas trips and a Molli museum to discover a lot of culture and art. There is even a fun run on May 1st, the Molli Run along the historic Lindenallee. At Pentecost, the series of events "Art Open" runs, in which artists and craftsmen in Doberan and the surrounding area open their studios, galleries, art courtyards, workshops and present their art and skills. In Neubukow you can visit the Heinrich Schliemann memorial. The well-known researcher, merchant and excavator from Troy, Mycenae, Orchomenus and Tiryns was born on January 6th, 1822 in Ankershagen near Neubukow. The exhibition reports on his life and the excavations with exhibits.
Another cultural meeting place with artist readings is the Ehm-Welk-Haus right on Dammchaussee. The writer Ehm Welk lived here on the beautiful Lindenallee in the last part of his life (150-1966). His best-known works include the novels "The Heathens of Kummerow", "The Righteous of Kummerow" and "The Life Clock of Gottlieb Grambauer". They were also filmed and the streets in the nearby residential area were named after his characters as a souvenir.
In June, the water festival takes place in Bad Doberan with various water-related events and the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and his entourage bathing in historic costumes in Heiligendamm. In September, of course, we also celebrate the Open Monument Day in Bad Doberan and the monastery days in mid-September. In mid-October there is the long night of culture in Bad Doberan with open shops, galleries, readings, live music with delicious food in the restaurants, pubs and outdoors and much more - the buildings are beautifully illuminated. In the nearby art town of Glashagen you can even watch various artists (potters, glassblowers, painters, natural furniture makers) at work and take part in courses.
